Q I dont have insomnia, I have hypersomnia. Nothing helps, I am unable to wake up. Setting alarms just does not do the trick. I fall asleep in the break room, on the bus, when I read etc. My doctor has set the tentative diagnosis of "idiopathic hypersomnia", but I will not get medicine until I see a specialist. And he does not have time until February 2014. All I do is go to work. When I get home, I sleep. I want to have a life...
Idiopathic hypersomnia involves sleeping too much without any apparent cause such as narcolepsy, isolated sleep paralysis, obstructive sleep apnea and restless leg syndrome. Your condition can be managed with stimulant medications which your physician can prescribe. Additionally, you can make a few lifestyle changes to improve your condition. Do not consume alcohol or any other drug that will cause drowsiness. Please refrain from driving vehicles or operating any heavy machinery. Avoid delaying bedtime due to any possible reasons like social events, television etc. Atleast till you get started on medications, try to spend your home time sleeping, so that you be alert at work. Dont worry, once the medication is begun, you will experience a better quality of life.
