Q My sister has been diagnosed with lupus and has to go on a treatment of cortisone. Please can you tell me what lupus is and the likely outlook?
Lupus erythematosus is a name given to number of symptoms and signs as a result of autoimmune disease, in which human immune system becomes hyperactive and attacks normal, healthy tissues. Symptoms of this disease can affect many different body systems, including joints, skin, kidneys, blood cells, heart, and lungs. Symptoms vary from person to person, and may come and go. Common symptoms are joint pain or swelling, photo sensitivity, skin rashes, fatigue, fever, mouth and nose ulcers etc. There is currently no permanent cure for lupus. Symptomatic treatment is given for relief. Cortisone are steroids and are used in treatment of lupus to suppress hyperactive immune system. It is important for her to eat healthy, exercise regularly, rest adequately and protect herself from sunlight.
