Q At that time i got a maniac attack , having bipolar disorder ,after that i did not get any episodes for next 3-4 years, i got depression i am on medication depakote + licab XL daily at night .I would like to know whether continuing the tablets for long will have any side effects ,and whether this is the best treatment ?Also suggest some precautions or tests if any that i should undergo?
Every drug carries with it a host of side-effects. However, when the beneficial effect of a drug far outweighs its side effects, a doctor is justified to prescribe that drug. Depakote brings with it a whole list of side-effects, however the major effect is on the liver, pancreas and gastrointestinal system in general. The side effects of Licab mostly revolve around CNS and gastrointestinal systems. However, both these drugs are recommended for treatment of bipolar disorder esp manic attacks. As long as you keep monitoring Liver, pancreas and renal function tests every 3 months and keep in regular touch with your physician, you can continue with your present medication.
