Q Hello, Today I got my dads health check up reports and there are 3 concerns in it and I would like to know your opinion on the same. My dad is 54 years old and as of now he doesnt have any serious medical issues except hes been having cough with sputum from past 4-5 years which is really loud and no medication (general medicines for cough even the ones that doctors prescribed have not reduced it) but he doesnt have any asthama or related issues. Also he has knee pain which is affecting badly day by day. Other than these 2 issues, there are no other complications. The medical report that Ive attached here has following recommendations. 1. It has an alert for Eosinophilia. What does this mean? Should it be treated with any medication? 2. It has suggested for THYRONORMALCY. Does this have anything to do with his frequent coughing? What kind of tests should we do again? Is this thyroid? 3. Vitamin D is in insufficient level for him. What kind of medication should we give for the same? Is this the cause for his knee pain? Please advise and let me know if you need more information.
You have mention medical history and lab reports of your dad, so i am giving you advice step by step..1) Your dad is having cough with sputum from past 4-5 years, so there is definitely respiratory pathology. Though he have no history of asthma. You did not mention that whether he was smoker or not.You can undergo following investigation to rule out any problem related to respiratory system. a) chest X ray b) sputum examination c) Complete blood count with ESR d) ECG........2) Second problem is about knee pain. It can be age related, as bone becomes weak and degenerative changes occur in it. It can be osteoporosis. Also there is insufficient vitamin D as you have mentioned. This frequent joint pain condition since long duration can have effect on respiratory system and Heart. Joints pain in Rheumatoid arthritis can have Rheumatic heart Disease. To rule out any such possibility you can undergo following investigation. a) RA factor test- this blood test is used to diagnose rheumatoid arthritis. b) CD Heart- To diagnose is there is any effect on heart due to joint pain......... 3) You have asked about eosinophilia. Eosinophilia is nothing but elevated eosinophil ( blood component) seen in blood test. Mostly this is elevated in any allergic conditions or if there is any kind of infection in body. Mostly eosinophilia is seen if there is any respiratory problem or allergies. As your dad have frequent coughing with sputum since long, blood test shows eosinophilia. Whether it should be treated or not depends on its numerical range and related symptoms of patient..........4) Thyronormalcy means your dad have no problem related to thyroid. 5) As there is insufficient vitamin D, your dad must be given calcium and vitamin D rich supplement and related medication. My advice is visit your physician for any kind of treatment, as he is in better position to do this, as he has seen and examined your father. Discuss about lab investigation i have advised with your doctor and then only do it.
