Q Hi, Im a 56 years old male with type 2 diabetes and on medication since the last 5 years. I have recently shifted to insulin due to poor control with oral drugs since the last 3 months. On using insulin 30/70 human mixtard (before lunch and dinner) the HbA1c was 7%. Since the last two days my PP blood sugar was 215-230 mg /dl. I have also noticed hypoglycemia on several occasions since i started taking insulin. What do you suggest? Thanks
Diabetes control is a combination of medicines, diet and exercise. Along with your insulin you will have to make some lifestyle changes. Replace refined foods with whole grains. For example: opting for brown bread instead of white bread. Include plenty of fresh fruits and green veggies in your every day meal. Make sure you have some amount of protein in all your main meals. Foods like chicken, fish, eggs, milk, curd, paneer, nuts, legumes and pulses are all good sources of protein. Cut down on your alcohol consumption and quit smoking. Along with eating healthy it is necessary that you some form of exercise regularly. Cycling, jogging, brisk walking, swimming are all great options. Make sure to exercise atleast 30 minutes a day initially. Get regular checkups. Make these changes, and hope to see the change in your sugar levels.
