Q I am 22 years old boy having astigmatism. How can i protect my vision from getting worse? If i wear contact lenses, would my cornea shape change permanently?
In astigmatism, generally, the cylindrical power tends to be quite stable. However, the spherical error increases over the time. Only time will tell if the power will increase or not. Contact lenses temporarily change the shape of the cornea. For astigmatism, special soft contact lenses called toric lenses are prescribed. Soft toric lenses have greater light bending power in one direction than the other. Another option, particularly for higher amounts of astigmatism, is a gas permeable rigid contact lens. Another method for correcting astigmatism is by changing the shape of the cornea through refractive or laser eye surgery.
