Q I am 21 year old female who has been having delayed menstrual cycles by 14 days. I have been getting my periods every 44 days for the last 8 months. The doctor asked for some hormones tests (fsh, lh and prolactin). The results are: fsh: 5.64 miu/ml, lh: 6.2 miu/ml, prolactin: 26.38 ng/dl. Are these results normal? The doctor said that prolactin reference value should be below 20 ng/dl. Please advice.
The normal level for prolactin varies from lab to lab. But, the average range is up to the 20 ng/dl. The increase in this hormone may lead to delayed menstruation. The causes of increase in prolactin level are- physiological causes may be after coitus, exercise, sleep, stress etc. And pathological causes include-use of any oral contraceptives, any other medicine, trauma, tumour of the pituitary gland, any liver disease, thyroid or kidney disease etc. You must consult your gynecologist to rule out the cause and get best curative and preventive treatment.
