Q What causes kidney failure?
Kidney failure are of two types- acute and chronic. The cause for both varies. ACUTE KIDNEY FAILURE occurs when the 1. blood flow to the kidney is hampered due to reasons like blood loss, fluid loss, severe burn, severe dehydration, liver disease, heart disease, due to medicines like aspirin, blood pressure medicine. 2. direct damage to kidney due to reasons like sepsis, NSAIDS, antibiotics, multiple myeloma, rhabdomyolysis, gluomerulonephritis, infection, blood clots, cholesterol deposits in the blood vessels, vasculitis. 3. retention of urine in kidneys due to blockage outside the kidney. Common reasons are ureter or bladder obstruction, prostrate enlargement or cancer, tumours of abdomen obstructing the ureters. CHRONIC KIDNEY FAILURE occurs gradually over a period of time. The common causes are uncontrolled diabetes, hypertension, chronic glomerulonephritis.
