Q When i try to do any exercise, like running, i leak urine. This is not only embarrassing, it is also uncomfortable. Even if i fully empty my bladder before going for a run, it still happens. If i go swimming, about 20 minutes after coming out of the pool, i leak water again, even though i do not feel i need to go to the toilet. It is ruining any form of physical exercise for me and it makes me want to stay at home. Any ideas? I have had two children.
You are probably suffering from stress incontinence wherein urine leaks out whenever there is stress on the bladder during sneezing, coughing, running etc. It is common in women especially as a consequence of pregnancy and childbirth. The treatment lies in strengthening the pelvic muscles so that they do not yield so easily to pressure. Learn Kegels exercises and practice them daily for about 30 repetitions. You should start seeing improvement in bladder control within 3-6 weeks. If this doesnt help, you can opt for medication and surgical procedures. Remember that your urinary incontinence is treatable and you need not give up your physical activity.
